Forcing Ourselves Out of the EchoChamber: PandoDaily Is Hitting the Road

If you’ve read anything I’ve written the past two years, you know I’m a big believer that Silicon Valley’s greatest product export has been its startup culture.

As a result, great ideas are increasingly popping up in uncommon places. Although it’s important for PandoDaily to be headquartered in the Valley, we want to make sure we’re covering entrepreneurs in other places too. So starting next month, our intrepid reporter Trevor Gilbert is hitting the road to find great stories outside the echo chamber.

Trevor is starting in Chicago. He lands March 3 and will be there for two weeks.

That’s right: This isn’t some fly-in-do-a-meet-up-and-leave kinda gig. To ensure that Trevor is really getting embedded in the community, he’ll be in each place for two weeks. And to ensure we’re spending as little money as possible, he’ll be couch-surfing with entrepreneurs and working in coffee shops and co-working spaces. He’ll be actually living and working in local entrepreneurs’ shoes.

The goal is to cover more than just individual promising companies, but to really get a sense of what it’s like to start a company in each place. So expect posts about startup culture in each city– what’s good about it and where there are challenges. You may not like everything we write, but you can’t say we’re ignoring you. And at least you can buy Trevor a beer and hope to change his mind in person, rather than just leaving a nasty comment.*

To start out, Trevor is going to hit a new city every other month. If it goes well, we’ll up that to 12 cities a year in 2013. The six cities we’re focusing on this year are Chicago, Boulder, Austin, Seattle, Boston and Detroit. Trevor picked the first five because they’re all known hotspots that plenty of readers want to know more about. I picked Detroit because there are few US cities that need an entrepreneur scene more. If there’s one building there, we want to make sure we are championing it.

If you have leads on companies, couch-surfing and coworking offers in any of those cities flood Trevor with emails. I mean try to break the servers. I want to hear Trevor complaining of an email problem of epic MG Siegler proportions. (More than he does already.) He’s Trevor at PandoDaily dot com, or you can follow him on Twitter here.

We might do some casual networking events in each city, if there’s demand for it. If you live in any of those places and would be interested in event sponsorship opportunities email Oni at pandodaily dot com.

(*You can’t actually buy him a drink, because he’s not 21 yet.)

When he's in Chicago, he needs to meet up with Ron May, editor of the May Report, a Chicago focused tech blog. A bit of a curmudgeon, but if you want the real deal on any companies there, he'll know all the personalities and their history. Tell him that Jeanne Heydecker sent him and BTW, don't sit for a meal with him. It's grisly.

Echoing Jake: When you come to Austin, you should sneak up to Dallas for a couple days. Hang at Tech Wildcatters and the Foundry. Get Kolaches in West on the way, etc. I'll happily put together and event to expose you to the best of the DFW startup scene.

Let's get Trevor to Sarasota, FL. Sun n fun and Tech too!

You should check out Nashville. Crazy fun town. Way more than country music (I mean Jack White and the Black Keys live here). Very entrepreneurial spirit. A lot of that has been around healthcare, but that is evolving. Some interesting start-ups made good like HSTM (healthcare technology) and more true start-ups like Goba (I know Goba recently did a deal with Enconcert in a strange Nashville-meets-Silicon-Valley-in-reverse story (music company in Silicon Valley/tech company in Nashville). I'll be glad to plug you in with others here too if you're interested. luthercale@gmail.com

You guys should add Research Triangle Park to the mix. Let me know how I can help jason@southcap.com

You should certainly swing by Dallas if you're in Austin. There's lots of great work going on here!

Make sure you visit with Chris DeVore at Founders Co-op/Techstars in Seattle. He'll confirm that Portland is finally finding its startup voice. We may not have Microsoft, but we have beer and less traffic. Like Rick, I'm biased.

Couldn't agree more. DeVore is awesome. And I'm not just saying that because he's active in Portland. But that definitely helps.

When Trevor is in Chicago he should take a quick ride up to Madison for a day or two. We're in the Chicago sphere with a growing web scene. Plus it's fun.

my brother lives in madison. i agree. great tech talent there. trevor: do that.

He can couch-surf at my office in Portland if he skips Seattle in favor of us! ;)

I was very critical of Trevor in his now infamous post last week. This is a great idea though and hopefully will bring some really interesting content to Pando. I always enjoy seeing the brand new startups Robert Scoble finds, hopefully this will bring many more to view. Even if they fail it's cool to see what people are working on.

Why not add Cape Town to your list next time around? Africa has some amazing startup stories going on...

And Windhoek too.

Chicago while under 21? He will miss a few awesome blues clubs. That said, it will keep him out of a few unsavory blues clubs. Good use of his age! :)

Trevor - enjoy your travels and when you get to Boulder (definitely take Brad up on his offer; he's as connected as it gets) but definitely reach out and we'd be happy to help you make the most of your stay. Hit me up at toma@houseofgenius.org and we'll do all we can. - House of Genius Team

Sarah- I hope this means you will be covering the south!

Trevor - looking forward to seeing you in Boulder. Give me a shout at brad@feld.com and I'll get you plugged in to anything you'd like.

You should give Philadelphia a shot. http://www.capography.com/ just went live which does some awesome work for systemizing cap tables.

looking forward to a boulder visit even if I am from denver, and I think the community would embrace an event and I know plenty of stocked refrigerators that don't card

You should go to Jamestown, NY

Trevor must come to i.c.stars while in Chicago! www.icstars.org. We are a model non-profit for change driven individuals in Chicago harnessing technology for social and economic leadership. in addition to technology, leadership and business training with a cool social enterprise we can offer Trevor the experience of high tea, our daily ritual at 4pm where we invite entrepreneurs, business, leaders and community leaders to share a pot of tea and their journey with the next generation of entrepreneurs, technologists and change agents. please contact me to schedule a visit ! Sandee Kastrul, president i.c.stars

Come to New York and visit @Appboy

Looking forward to you coming to Detroit! There is a start up scene slowly building here...

Chicago must be blushing from all the attention it's getting. You guys are coming just days after VentureBeat stops by on their own tour (of course, they didn't book an extended stay). Totally looking forward to buying Trevor a cool glass of orange juice!

It's funny how everyone chooses to go to Seattle over Portland. I assume they think it's bigger, so it obviously has more going on. Wrong.

Portland rocks. Alas, only having 6 slots means many great cities have to wait until the next round. Shoot us some details on what we should check out in Portland?

While it smarts to have Portland overlooked, I thought the bulk of the picks were kind of safe for you guys. I'd really like to see PandoDaily doing something different than just visiting the usual startup spots. Omaha is too good to pass up. (Ask Sarah about her book trip there. They killed it.) And, obviously, I think Portland is too good to pass up, too. But clearly, I'm biased ;)

Reasons for visiting the Portland startup scene besides PDX quality of life - broad commitment from local and regional government to building tech scene as engine of broader economic growth. A recent Portland Development Commission grant of $500,000 funded investment in early stage companies based here, earning matching investment from private investors. The current mayor of Portland (Sam Adams) has embraced the tech community – spearheading the PDC grant program and supporting partnerships with the Portland State Business Accelerator, Portland Incubator Experiment, Oregon Entrepreneurs Network and other tech associations. This is a local government recognizing that tech can jumpstart other economic activity - but that the tech community needs support from educational, regulatory and small business institutions to thrive.

Lately, I've had Seattle folks talk about how they wish their startup eco-system could be a active as Portland's. No lie.

advantage for seattle is trevor can couch surf with arrington... i love portland. definitely top of the list for next year.

Eek. You sound like the mayor in Portlandia. I've lived in both cities and Seattle clearly has a more vibrant tech / startup community.

Maybe you should come visit both....things change quickly.

I thought Kyle MacLachlan was the mayor of Portlandia? To echo jmartens, a lot has changed. Granted Seattle has its tech juggernauts and impressive startups, but Portland has gained a lot of ground recently.

The only reason to come to Portland is if you have a particular penchant for incest. Really. I can tell you the six people who will control the narrative and build the maze that only leads in certain directions, blocking routes to others. Really. There's no reason to come to Portland, when someone can phone in the story that will be told and repeated ad infinitum. Hitting city/towns like Spokane, Boise, Albuquerque all seems more interesting than traveling over pretty well trodden turf. Place like Seattle, Boulder and Austin don't need Pandodaily, they have a really great reporting infrastructure already in place - Everyone already know what goes on there, or can find out easily. Venture out to the hinterlands (far less expensive and zero glamour), heck go to Sacramento, you'd be surprised what goes on there. Orlando? How about Baton Rouge (and that amazing tech center just south of there funded by the State, laetc.com)??? Really, the "top 5" are so predictable, it's hardly worth the trip. And neither is Portland.

You're using a pseudonym. Why don't you just name names? I'd like to hear them. Really.

See? Portland has drama! Well worth the trip.

Bitter indie is bitter. Or else not actually in Portland. The Women and Women First Bookstore ladies would be horrified at the use of the word "incest." "Nepotism," I'll accept. Perhaps "clique-ishness." For myself, six years in, I remain astonished at the number of people I'm still meeting who are doing fundamentally cool stuff in Portland.

Seconded! We'd love to host and introduce you to all the great startups at the Portland State Business Accelerator.

Trevor, you CAN't be Sarah Lacy. Wait, you are not trying to be Sarah Lacy? That does not matter, I repeat you can not be Sarah Lacy, go back to your shepard routes. (Trevor = Newry, Sarah Lacy = Silicon Valley)

I think we should all stop hating Trevor and just give the guy a break. We all screw up at some point and great reporters aren't made overnight. As Sarah said, PD is listening to the readers, but it seems like you just want to keep ranting for no reason. The project sounds really interesting. So, seriously, move on.
