One of the common complaints you hear from iOS users is the lack of an adequate Gmail solution. Sure, the native Mail app provides very basic integration with Gmail, like archiving and starring, but what if you want to get beyond that and work with your Priority Inbox? You’re out of luck. The only options left are the Gmail iPhone app (um, no), web Gmail (um, no) and Android (um, maybe?).
Thankfully, there is an application on the horizon, and it perfectly solves the problem. The app is Sparrow for iPhone, and it is coming out in the middle of March. The best part? Three of our readers will be given early access to it.
Before we get into the details of our little giveaway, let’s look at Sparrow and the company behind it. The application has been immensely popular on the Mac, with close to 500 downloads per day, according to co-founder Dominique Leca. Leca noted that for the traditional model of applications when there is a free version available, the split is normally 90% free downloads, 10% paid downloads. However, Leca said that on the Mac App Store, the split is more along the lines of 50-50. Numerically? About 220 paid downloads a day, and 200 free downloads.
Why is the app doing so well, with free alternatives built-in natively, and available on the web? Well, ever since the introduction of Mac OS X Lion, people have been complaining about the state of the built-in Mail client. While it does get the job done on a basic level, it lacks advanced Gmail integration and isn’t very fast. Sparrow, on the other hand, is designed from the ground up to be integrated with Gmail by the team of four engineers and designers. Throw on top of this an application that pays an incredible attention to detail, and a unique interface, and you’ve got a winner.
With this momentum and success, Sparrow started to look towards mobile (like any self-respecting company would do). According to Leca, the platform is underserved by Apple and Google, with no significant third parties. So, Sparrow did what anyone would do. They decided to take advantage of it.
The first step was to mobilize the application. That means taking the email engine being used on the Mac, and adapt it to be faster, lighter and simpler for mobile. Sparrow is happy to report that the application is now much faster (which I can verify with anecdotal testing). Mobilizing it also meant figuring out how a mail application should work with a touchscreen. This is something that you will have to use to believe. The best part about this? The faster mail engine will be ported back to the Mac, and the interface will be ported to other mobile platforms.
Ah, you saw that “other mobile platforms” there? Well, Leca also divulged to me that although their focus is on iOS right now, they did build the app with an eye towards the future. By that, he meant that the mail engine can be recycled for other platforms (Android) and devices (iPad).
The application itself is still being finished, and they are working towards approval with Apple, which they fully expect to receive. The fact that it is still being finished means that I’m not allowed to show you anything, or talk about the interface in detail. Which is a shame, because the application is fantastic.
Not only did they manage to reach feature parity with the desktop application (everything you would expect, multiple inboxes, fully native, Gmail integration, etc.), but they also layered on a very innovative and intuitive UI for touchscreens. It is the type of interface where you do something and realize, “hey, that’s pretty cool!” every ten seconds for the first few times.
While I can’t show the application itself, I can do one better. Which brings me to our little giveaway.
For three of our lucky readers, Sparrow has agreed to give away access to the beta. To win, leave a comment below explaining why you need Sparrow for iOS. At the end of the day (or tomorrow morning), we’ll go through and pick the three winners. You will need a free TestFlight account to test the application, and of course, everything you see will be entirely confidential, so no screenshots to the public!

LikePoor email management has always been the thing preventing my switch to Apple. When I got completely fed up with the bugs on my Android phone, I made the switch to IPhone. I work in QA and I couldn't stand to deal with bugs on my phone too! The IPhone worked so well and beautifully, I made the switch to a Mac too. I've been struggling along now for a bit with the Mail app to manage my four main accounts. Between its refusal to consistently honor my Gmail SMTP settings (so mail I thought was sent wasn't) and inability to mimic Gmail's features, I've known I needed to make a switch. That's when I got Sparrow, which has helped immensely! I'm now down to Inbox Zero thanks to Sparrow's much better productivity tools. Now if only I could bring that same functionality to my IPhone, I'd be the master of email everywhere and never have to spend all weekend catching up again!

LikeDammit, I missed it! I manage several email accounts and it's just a ridiculous task trying to keep up with them on the iPhone. ESPECIALLY when it comes to dealing with labels. Not to mention it's pretty ugly. I NEED the Sparrow iPhone App because in a world of busy iPhone users, I need beauty with substance, just like my iphone. My email app needs to be robust and eye catching!!

LikeThis is amazing! Have been using Sparrow since beta and currently a paid user. Love the app and how it performs on Mac. As for iOS (both), hope it would be a Universal app with some extra features like Passlock (neither Mail and GMail have!) to better protect my emails.

LikeI need Sparrow for iOS as it is the final step in switching to an iPhone full time from my main Android device. I love Sparrow on my Mac which I use for work and personal accounts, but the native Mail app on my iPad and iPod touch are useful only for basic reading and replying. It's hard to track down a sent message for a thread that I was the last person to reply to or to quickly organise into multiple labels. Search doesn't seem reliable either and the Gmail app is only kept on my devices when I am desperate to find something or organise a bunch of emails quickly. Can't wait to have the beauty of Sparrow running on my various iOS devices!

LikeSparrow for Mac was the first app I've have ever bought in the Mac App Store. As soon as I watched its first highlights videos, I knew that app was going to be my alternative to Apple's Mail. I've been following and tracking Sparrow since its beginning with beta 6 and actively contributing on Sparrow's forum for suggestions and bug reports (in case you would like to check my profile, it is ruiwy1). From all these tests Sparrow has gotten, I have never got to one, even for Sparrow's final build (1.0) and all its amazing features. Now that Sparrow's looking for testers for their iOS version, I'd like to be part of this team because I believe I can make a lot of suggestions and improvements, just like I did on the Mac build. Thank you for your attention and good luck to everyone!

LikeI manage three email accounts daily on my phone: work, school and personal. I need to keep the messages separate as well as make sure the reply to addresses are properly matched up, something that Sparrow for Mac lets me do but that fails miserably on the Mail.app on my phone. Since I'm a college student and typically away from my computer for most of the day, I need a robust yet easy to use and minimal mail solution so I can stay in sync–something I know Sparrow for iPhone can provide.

LikeThere's no solution for a native Gmail-integrated client for iOS. I work with labels all day, everyday and using Sparrow for Mac doesn't help when I'm out and about. I helped out with the beta for Mac client too and Sparrow does it better than everyone else. I NEED this.

LikeI need Sparrow for iPhone because the Mac version got me talking to more chicks. They've been coming up to me randomly while I was flying through my mail and they were all like: "dude, what's up with that sexy mail client." And I was all like: "I'll explain that to you spooning in the center of my bed." So, I've been giving it a lot of thought and I figured it out. With Sparrow for iPhone, I see great opportunities to mobilize my strategy, multiplying the total amount of women who talk to me up to four. Per year.

LikeHi, I desperatly need Sparrow for iPhone. I keep struggling between Mail, Gmail app and (web Gmail) and I just can't take it any more. I use Sparrow for Mac (paid version) since it was launched, I love it, and now that Gmail is so ugly, I can't live without it. I love the attention to detail and how much the Sparrow team cares about what they're doing. I don't know how such a small team can build something so great. I'm willing to go wild on feedback! :)

I have 4 gmail (google apps) addresses that I use regularly, and searching for an email (received or sent) on apples mail app SUCKS! LikeI *need* the Sparrow beta on my iPhone for the same reason everyone else does - Mail.app and the Gmail app are just excruciatingly bad for heavy-duty mobile mail! Why should you choose me, though? Because I'm an app-evangelist on par with Gruber, Topolsky, and the rest of the blogosphere combined... but with the discretion of an SAS officer! You can be sure I'll keep quiet during the beta, and know that I'll be waving the banner when the app launches (assuming it's even half as good as its Mac counterpart!)

As a designer, I'm forever trading media with clients over multiple accounts and backtracking through threads to pick up on ideas and inspiration. From what I've seen of the previews, Sparrow for iOS is the strongest compliment to my workflow and I would be forever indebted to the folks for a head-start at the freedom and efficiency it would enable.
