As the days start to grow longer, so do the episodes of Why Isn’t This News.
In this week’s episode, Sarah and I discuss the care and feeding of writers. Specifically we discuss whether it’s possible to create a supportive (financially and otherwise) environment for writers while also surviving the economics of web content production. You might not be surprised to hear that we both think it is.

Did I just get a name check in this video? I didn't explode....maybe I was supposed to?

LikeThe whole laid back approach to this interview just made it much more enjoyable for me. The content was solid, but I really enjoyed seeing Pando's 2 Senior members going back and forth using the FlipPhone. Personally, as an audience member, I felt like I was eavesdropping on your conversation, and the whole interview had a 'modern' fireside chat feel. I really hope you two continue with this bit and continue bringing the fun and your candid opinions.

LikeGreat video. Best WITN so far. (At least the audio was quite nicely listenable. :) I think all great content destinations have a posture, a tone and a style, and so far PandoDaily has done a fantastic job. Clearly the most entertaining tech site...which is what was great (though occasionally annoying) about the "old" TC. Either one is superior I guess to...boring. To comment specifically on your video, I've been involved in online media on a small scale from both editorial and web developer perspectives (and both hiring or being hired) for a long time, and I can attest to the fact that this notion that you could actually, like, you know, make a living in online media is definitely rare. It is a huge breath of fresh air what you both (Sarah and Paul) doing here. I await the results down the road very very eagerly. I also must admit to being one of those people that has gotten people to write posts for free or very little -- not because I think screwing writers is fine, but because any money to pay them was essentially out of pocket. (And I have small pockets.) The mega funding PD has to pursue this vision is a real blessing and in a way I'm envious. Keep the WITN episodes coming! -Jared White

LikeI like the points about asking for editing and a second set of eyes. As you write regularly, you become keenly aware of how easily people can misunderstand or misinterpret something. A good writer shoulders more responsibility in this case, to do their best to ensure that their writing is clear and direct while still being engaging. (I've had 14 people read this comment and not one of them can understand what I'm on about.)

Like[...] My next find is an offering of PandoDaily. Why Isn’t This News? This is a new podcast from Sarah Lacy (@SarahCuda founder of @PandoDaily) and Paul Carr (@PaulCarr founder of NSFW Corp @NSFWHQ) and they talk about their past week as new founders of burgeoning new media behemoths! I love it. It’s raw, honest, and witty. Unfortunately, there is no easy way to view all the WITN videos on the PandoDaily website through categorising, but you can view the latest episode here. [...]

LikeHI Sarah, Great podcast. Its really sad to see TechCrunch falling apart like this, and i couldn't wait to see what you do next. I started following techcrunch, when i worked on the crunchboard website for a few weeks. I actually read your's & paul's posts a lot. Your work definitely helped me a lot in the understanding tech's corporate structure, and i hope you continue to do amazing work with pandodaily.

LikeI love watching WITN! It is reality broadcasting done right. However, my challenge is this. I do not have the fastest internet in the world (Nope, not the second fastest either). So if I do not have the time to watch it in one sitting (not including buffering time), it takes an effort to do so later. Is it possible to have downloads? I've tried every trick in the book but it seems impossible (nice one Vimeo). How about an audio version that can be multi-tasked with?

LikeI do like your conversations like this, but it would be good if there was a little more effort put into the production, if only to reduce the trolling ;-) I'd be more than happy to volunteer my editing skills and some tips on how to easily improve the production without costing much at all (I used to be a video editor).

Likethis show is the one place where i actually do read and weigh in on the comments every week. sometimes i don't on news articles because when you read too many comments they get in your head as a writer. i can always tell a blogger who overly-reads comments because they start arguing with themselves in the post in anticipation. i.e.: "NOW I KNOW WHAT YOU ARE GOING TO SAY..." i religiously stayed out of the comments like it was a bad neighborhood after midnight on TC, but i'm trying to force myself to weigh in now that it's my own site. i owe the readers that much, as uncomfortable as it may be for me. paul, on the other hand, has never met a troll he didn't like

LikeThe second camera's microphone is much less harsh than the first. I love the personal insight we're getting into how Pando is made, right down to Eli's cameos and the ongoing soap opera at TechCrunch. For what it's worth, I also think you're striking a great balance between insider Silicon Valley stuff and wider tech news that's useful to people on the wrong side of the world. None of us can afford not to keep abreast of tech news today, and Pando is doing it for me and making me smile into the bargain. If you can do that and make money, more power to you, Sarah!

LikeI don't understand why people are complaining about the video, or the editing. Its the content of the video that matters, not the video itself, and the content was great. It provided a great insight into how PD operates. Great video, its actually the first time I watch from start to finish. Keep up the great work guys.

LikeI don't know of a better way to spend 37 minutes. "Who has thumbs and a two bit economy" made me bust up. These videos need more duck analogies. Every week finding what new way they are going to shoot these or what isn't perfect with these videos makes me just want to keep coming back.

Oh, and if the guy who was trashing you can put in a plug ;) we're launching Altsie (promo site www.blog.altsie.com) in three weeks if you're interested in a story. LikePaul Carr - Game mechanics applied to content: Advertising barriers. If you want to deal with the pain int he ass of going to multiple pages, seeing ads, then you can peruse the content for free. If you want an ad-free experience, with articles on a single page (no content divided across clicks), you can pay. Pandora did this with their content (music).

LikePiggybacking off Philip's idea, maybe add incentives on The New Gambit for sharing articles if you want to get traction in the beginning and have them even more widely distributed. Paying readers would be have to be logged in, so they could easily be served up a custom URL for that page which would include an affiliate-type link. When they share it on whatever social networks they're on, they receive 1 credit for each click through they get, with each credit worth 1 cent (or something like that). This is then used to reduce their next month's subscription cost and no more - that way, people couldn't overly abuse the system and have you end up paying them. People clicking through see the ad-supported content, across multiple pages, etc. This gets the content out there, plus The New Gambit would get some kind of CPM ad revenue that helped to offset the lowered subscription costs for the sharers, with some of the new visitors also liking what they see and converting into paying subscribers. I'm not aware of this model being out there which suggests one of three things: 1) I'm a genius 2) This model is out there and I'm ignorant of it 3) This model isn't out there because it's a crappy model and there are many flaws in the idea I haven't thought of yet, considering it just came to me I'm leaning towards 2 or 3, but figured it'd be worth putting out there.

LikeIt's hard to explain why I found this so captivating, as I'm not in the business of tech blogging. This video, however, is a refreshing look into the editorial team at Pando, their vision for their business, and how they prioritize giving and helping the "junior" members of their team so that they can blossom. They deserve every investor in, and penny of, their $2.5m round.

LikeI always hated my copy editors- when I used to write for a magazine. especially the ones fussy about the a.p style guidelines argh! I never written for a blog, I wonder if it's the same hierarchy of the editor>copy editor>writer cycle

Likei personally liked copy editors because i am dyslexic and it's hard for me to see certain things immediately after writing. similarly, all the writers here have asked for one. but i hear you. our copy editor isn't a total AP nazi, we just want to clean things up, eliminate typos and make sure names are spelled right. sometimes he'll edit after the fact, sometimes before -- up to the reporter. so there's no hierarchy at all between copy editor and writers. he's here to help the writers and by extension the readers. we have a pretty flat organization. we hire good people and trust them to do great work. but if they ask for help on something, i want to make sure they get it. all about enabling writers to do their best work.

LikeThis was very interesting content that was made almost unwatchable by the amateur presentation. I appreciate you probably hadn't planned on shooting in the same room for this feature, but $2.5m in funding should be enough to afford a second camera, two tripods and some lapel mikes. Also, if you are worried about the length, just edit out every mention by SL of "like" and "you know". That should save a few minutes...

LikeIf anyone ever tries to clip a lapel mic on me for the show, I'll probably stop doing it. It's just Sarah and me chatting. Fortunately I just checked and lapel mics cost $1.26m each, so Pando can't afford two.

LikeThese videos in a lot of respects are far worse than what 12 year olds on YouTube produce with a budget of $5 allowance. With that said I didn't say that they didn't have anything interesting to say. PLUG: About a month ago we were accepted into round 2 of a very small venture incubator called I/0 Ventures in San Francisco which gives a very small petty cash style allowance to firms to start up. I took a CS code test for the program on codeeval and scored perfect verified by the automated scoring. We've determined that the program is not worth it and just as I did with our Mangrove VC meeting in Luxembourg I am going to detail the experience in high def on StartupGazette next week. So if you like old school under the bus TC articles like Arrinton's "Angelgate" article check it out.
