Conspiracy: Google Search in iOS 6 Safari Omits Referrer Data
SEO manager Ryan Jones uncovered that the iOS 6 Safari browser does not log referrer data for searches performed with Google. In other words, if a users finds a site through Google search – via the default search field, not by visiting Google.com – the click is not being counted as a search referrer, rather the source appears to be a direct hit to the destination website. This was not the case in iOS 5 nor is it the case with Bing searches in iOS 6. It is unclear whether this is a bug or a deliberate change and whether it is on Google’s or Apple’s end, but in either case, let the conspiracy theories begin.
