Judge rules news outlets improperly used photos from Twitter
A judge ruled today that AFP and the Washington Post had infringed on a photographer’s copyrights when they reused pictures he posted to Twitter. The photos, taken in the aftermath of the 2010 earthquake in Haiti, were distributed by AFP to Getty Images then later used by the Washington Post in its coverage. AFP claimed that once they were uploaded to Twitter, they were available to reproduce freely. However the judge ruled that Twitter’s Terms of Service do not allow for commercial reuse of photos, only Retweeting and other sharing within Twitter and Twitter clients.
