Juniper: iPhone 5 has set NFC back by two years
Apple’s decision not to include near-field communication (NFC) tech in the iPhone 5 has set the NFC market in the US and Western Europe back by two years, says Juniper Research. Juniper argues that Apple’s move has reduced retailer and brand confidence in the technology, which has in turn led to fewer NFC rollouts and campaigns. This all adds up to a risk of “NFC indifference,” says the research firm. Juniper estimates that global NFC retail transaction values will reach $110 billion by 2017, well below the $180 billion figure it had previously forecast.
