Eligible voters in California can now register to vote online, starting today. The online form isn’t going to win any design awards, but it works: 3,000 Californians registered within its first 12 hours of availability. A voter’s identity must be confirmed by matching a state ID or driver’s license with a date of birth and the last four digits of a Social Security number. A dozen states already offer online voter registration and, this year, Washington state allowed registration via a Facebook app. The deadline to register to vote in the November election is Oct. 22.
