Neuroscientists at Cornell University have created a prosthetic retina that partially restores sight in mice. The device could eventually be developed for use in the more than 20 million people worldwide who lose their sight each year due to degeneration of their retina. The prosthetic consists of an array of surgically implanted electrodes that stimulate the optic nerve. Currently patients can discern edges and letters but cannot make out faces. [Source Nature]
