Eleanor Kolchin was hired at IBM in the 1940′s and provides an in-depth take on what it was like to be a woman working in the computer industry. One interesting tidbit, Kolchin revealed was the fact IBM didn’t allow females to get married and she had to keep her marriage a secret. She stated, “the reason was, it was the end of the war and they wanted to hire people who had fought in the war, who were then coming back from World War II and wanted jobs.” Fortunately for Kolchin, IBM changed is rules in 1951 allowing for females to get married.
