When its major cities aren't embroiled by riots caused by rising bus fares, Brazil boasts one of the most-used public transport systems in the world. And, as its citizens adopt smartphones, the country has become increasingly attractive to public transit services like Moovit, the "Waze for public transportation."

Moovit allows users to share information -- station cleanliness, changed routes, delays, and the like -- about public transit systems. It's one of the most popular navigation applications in Brazil, according to app intelligence firm App Annie, and it's today announcing a partnership with TIM Brazil meant to make it even more so.

The partnership will see Moovit's application pre-installed on Android smartphones sold on TIM Brazil's network, as well as allow TIM Brazil customers to use Moovit's app without paying for the requisite data, until December 11; add TIM Brazil's branding to the Moovit app; and show TIM Brazil's stores and recharge stations within Moovit's application.

Moovit President Omar Tellez says that Brazil is one of the company's most important markets -- 300,000 people in the country use the service, which is half the size of Moovit's entire user-base just a few months ago.

TIM Brazil's director of value-added services, Fabio Cristilli, says that the Moovit partnership is part of a larger push to offer easy access to apps and services to the carrier's 72 million customers.

Unlike wireless carriers like Verizon or AT&T, which pre-install heaping piles of crapware onto customers' phones to advertise their own services (and partner services), TIM Brazil's goal is to hook users on compelling services that will demonstrate the wonders available to those who pay for the carrier's data services.

Moovit expands in one of its most important markets. TIM Brazil hooks its customers on the service and then, once the 3-month trial is over, makes a bit of money by charging for the data that powers it. And then, maybe, people will be able to get to their bus on time.
