Startup mental health: "The stress which can be a positive force is also something which damages people."
Our 24-hour Don't Be Awful event wasn't just about addressing the various awfulnesses caused by the tech industry, but also those awfulnesses experienced the workers who are helping to build tomorrow's next big startups.
One such awfulness is the very real problem of depression and mental health amongst entrepreneurs and tech workers. As Rick Bidgood puts it:
"You have people who are being hurt and people who are suffering. It doesn't have to be like that. The stress which is part of doing the work, and can be a positive force is also something which damages people."Bidgood and his co-founder Rob McFeeley joined us at hour five of Don't Be Awful to explain why tech companies need to change their thinking on mental health. They also talked about BluePeriod, the organization they created to "design solutions for mental and emotional health in the startup and technology communities."
