Don't Be Awful, The Lost Tapes: Tim O'Reilly on building institutions not just startups
This time last year, we produced a 24-hour (non-stop) event called “Don’t Be Awful,” focussed on making the tech industry less… well… awful.
Twelve months on, how did we do? Uber has thousands of customer service complaints featuring the words rape and sexual assault and tries to claim they might down to a guy called Jason Rape (or, I dunno, Steve Sexual Assault.) So not well.
Late last week I decided to rewatch some of the videos from the event, which included the likes of Tim O’Reilly, David Hornik, Jay Simons and many, many more. While I was digging through our YouTube channel I realized that we’d neglected to make live some of the best sessions, including those starring... Tim O’Reilly, David Hornik and Jay Simons.
Better late than never, I always say. Over the course of this week I’ll be reposting the Lost Don’t Be Awful Tapes. Starting today with Sarah Lacy’s interview with Tim O’Reilly. In the video, embedded below, O’Reilly comments on the Techtopus wage fixing scandal and calls for tech founders to stop building companies to flip and instead to start establishing long-term institutions.
