This week’s guest on our “Uterus is a Feature Not a Bug” podcast is Samantha Ettus, an author and radio show host who has interviewed hundreds of working moms for her new book “The Pie Life: A Guilt-Free Recipe for Success and Satisfaction.”

I caught Ettus in the middle of a jam-packed San Francisco leg of her book tour, where she’s trying to go speak at as many companies as she can. Why? She believes if she can just get in front of women before they decide to “opt out” of their careers after giving birth, she can convince them not to.

That’s right: In a post-mommy war era where so many working moms hesitate to judge stay at home mom’s choices, Ettus goes there. It’s not about them making a decision for the next few years, she argues, it’s about making a decision to be economically dependent for the rest of their lives because the majority of women will never find a full time job in their profession again if they opt out after childbirth.

In our conversation we also debate the 50/50 marriage “secret” to a woman’s success, the stigma of divorce in our culture, the corrosive power of mommy guilt, and why "perfect" is the last word a woman should utter.
